Intelligent movement for human bodies

Pilates is a system of movement designed to enhance the body's alignment, strength, and flexibility. Focusing on the breath and the sensations of the body helps to deepen the mind-body connection and develop an overall sense of well being. Human Movement Pilates offers both mat and equipment- based private sessions.

Human Movement Pilates can tailor a movement program to address a wide range of conditions, such as back pain, knee replacement, osteoporosis, and Parkinson's Disease, just to name a few.

Human Movement Pilates also specializes in women's health programming, such as pelvic floor conditioning, pre and post natal Pilates, and diastasis repair.

At Human Movement Pilates, Pilates is for humans of every background, age, and body size.

Sessions are located at Studio 34 in West Philly at 4522 Baltimore Ave.

Pricing is based on a sliding-scale from $70-100 per session.

The goal of Pelvic floor Pilates, sometimes called Pfilates, is to increase pelvic floor strength and elasticity. A strong pelvic floor is critical for normal bladder and sexual function. A weak pelvic floor can lead to problems such as urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, and poor sexual satisfaction.

Many women encounter a great deal of confusing and conflicting information about what women should and should not do with their bodies while pregnant.  Human Movement Pilates can help keep women moving safely throughout pregnancy while preparing them for birth.

Pregnancy and childbirth can change a woman's body is countless ways.  For women with diastasis (defined as the separation of the rectus abdominal muscles), Human Movement Pilates techniques can assist in pelvic realignment and deep core abdominal retraining.  In other words, Human Movement Pilates can provide new mothers with the core muscle support they need by teaching them to use their abdominals effectively again.

Human Movement Pilates can help new mothers feel strong and energized to help them care for their new child and themselves.

The Health At Every Size (HAES) approach is a continuously evolving alternative to the weight-centered approach to treating clients and patients of all sizes. It is also a movement working to promote size-acceptance, to end weight discrimination, and to lesson the cultural obsession with weight loss and thinness. The HAES approach promotes balanced eating, life-enhancing physical activity, and respect for the diversity of body shapes and sizes.

The focus of Human Movement Pilates is on feeling stronger and fitter and improving the connection between the body and the mind, rather than looking a certain way.  Every person deserves to feel good in their body, regardless of their size.

Human Movement Pilates is the vision of Julia Naftulin.  Julia believes that Pilates is for everyone. Her practice is about much more than looking good – it’s about feeling strong and healthy. Julia came to Pilates as a dancer looking for a way to manage her own chronic back pain. As a result, Julia’s perspective on Pilates focuses on the rehabilitative elements of Pilates, while also giving her students a great workout.

Julia has been teaching Pilates since 2003. She earned a Masters Degree in Movement Therapy from Drexel University in 2007. Julia is certified to teach Pelvic Floor Pilates.  She received her pre and postnatal Pilates specialist certifications through the Center for Women’s Fitness, and is trained in the Center Method for Diastasis Recti Recovery.
